Review & Forward Planning Day Friday 8th February

Parents, staff and governors met together for the day to look at the five outcomes for children – Being safe, staying healthy, making a positive contribution, achieving economic well-being and enjoying & achieving. We are looking at all the information gathered on the day and using it to write our three year development plan. Watch out for the display in the corridor!

Ten in the bed….

is our core story for this half term in the 3 to 5 rooms. The children will be doing lots of counting and talking about the animals in the story and wild animals and their habitats. They will also be celebrating Chinese New Year, Pancake day and Easter during this half term.

Car Park

We are becoming increasingly concerned about the safety of the children around the entrance and car park. Parents are driving very quickly, double parking and reversing out. We have been advised by Road safety the best solution would be to close the car park to parents. We do not want to do this as we feel parents bringing very young babies and children need to be able to drive in. However, if the situation does not improve we will have no option but to close the car park between school hours. If you are able to park on the road please do so. We will monitor the situation over the next few weeks before making a final decision. The safety of the children must come first.

Litter

We are very proud of our lovely new building and know that the residents in the area are too. Sometimes children bring sweets to school, either for themselves or to share with their friends. Many parents allow their children to throw the paper wrappers on the floor, both inside and outside the building. Can you please ensure we keep the area clean and tidy by ensuring your child does not throw litter on the floor.Thank you.

Filming

On Friday 2nd March some of the children and staff will be filmed by a TV crew. The video will be used for training purposes in educational settings. No children will be named. If you do not want your child to be filmed please let the office know immediately.

Web-site

We are currently updating our school web-site http://www.stedmundsnscc.com/ Please have a look and tell us what you think. We are open to any suggestions as to how it can be improved. You can e-mail us directly from the website.

Snack Money

Children in Red and Yellow rooms – snack money of £3.00 is now due and should be paid at the office.

Holidays

School will close for two weeks on Friday 30th March, reopening Monday 16th April. The Children’s Centre will just be closed for Good Friday, 6th April and Easter Monday, 9th April.

What is a Children’s Centre?

Sure Start Children’s Centres were developed from the original Sure Start Local Programmes, Neighbourhood Nurseries and Early Excellence Centres.  St Edmund’s became a Children’s Centre in 2006.

Children’s Centres have been established to bring together early education, health, childcare and family support for the benefit of children aged 0-5 and their parents.  Currently there are 33 Children’s Centres in Bradford with the final 7 opening in the spring of 2010.

What services does a Children’s Centre offer?

Services offered by Sure Start Children’s Centres are based around a “core offer” – that is the menu of services that a family are entitled to.
These services include:
•    Good quality early learning, combined with full day care provision for children.
•    Good quality teacher input to lead the development of learning in the centre.
•    Child and family health services, including ante-natal services.
•    Parental Outreach
•    Family Support services.
•    Childminding Network base
•    Support for children and parents with special needs.
•    Effective links with Jobcentreplus to support parents/carers wishing to return to employment/training.

What services do we deliver?

At St Edmund’s we pride ourselves on being a fully integrated centre.  That is all our services are linked together and work to provide the best possible start for children and their families.

We aim to offer a “one-stop” service for families needs working alongside colleagues from partner organisations such as the National Health Service, Jobcentreplus and local colleges.

Foundation Stage

Our experienced Staff, use a range of teaching methods and resources to enable each child to reach their full potential.

Children starting school at rising five enter the Foundation Stage of the curriculum. This consists of six areas of learning, leading to Early Learning Goals. These areas are:

  • Knowledge and understanding
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Creative development
  • Physical development
  • Communication, language and literacy
  • Mathematical development

It is important that the Foundation Stage is seen as a discrete phase in a child’s development and not simply as preparation for Key Stage 1.

SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT

We aim to develop children’s positive awareness of the varied beliefs and life stances of different families and appreciation and sense of awe and wonder about the world around them.

MORAL DEVELOPMENT

We aim to develop children’s sense of right and wrong for them to have respect for other people’s feelings.

BEHAVIOUR

The ethos in the Nursery encourages good behavior, eg sharing, kindness, dealing with conflicts in a non-aggressive way and responding to adults’ requests. Staff recognize the importance of the adult’s role in promoting acceptable behaviour.

RECORDING AND ASSESSMENT

Whilst a child is in nursery, continuous recording of his/her achievements takes place.

At times, staff will observe what a child says and does and this will be recorded under curriculum headings in the child’s individual ‘observation folder’ which is permanently available to parents and carers.

Alongside this, each term, a few examples of drawing painting, mark making, etc., will be put into the child’s ‘Spec Book’ to provide a picture of the child’s development and progression.

Each term, these will form the basis of a summary of what the child has achieved that term and what we will work towards the following term.

All this information will be used in nursery to plan appropriate activities, and later, to write a transition report which will be sent to the child’s Primary School.

Copies of the termly progress report and the transition record are given to parents.

The policies, giving details of how we achieve the above aims, are available from the parents’ library.
