Governor’s Report – 2006
It hardly seems like a year since I last wrote to you all as chair of governors. It has been a very busy and exciting year at St Edmunds and this will be the last message to you from the site on Bingley Street, as later this year we will be moving to the Washington Street site.
The building seems to be progressing well, working towards the opening in October. The first ‘occupants’ will be twelve 2-3 year olds being offered a free nursery place of 7/½ hours per week as part of a new Government initiative. The places are being allocated to Pakistani and Bengali families deemed as being in need in terms of low income, unemployment etc, and parents who are taking up training. I am keeping an eye on the progress of the building work by driving very slowly down Washington Street every day- I wouldn’t want to think the builders weren’t working hard!
This is a very exciting time for all of us and we becoming quite impatient waiting for the move despite all the extra work this entails. We are beginning the process for the employment of new staff for the Centre, ensuring that we maintain the high standard of care to which our parents/children have become accustomed, which was evident from the outstanding OFSTED report this year.
The Children’s Centre will provide a much needed community resource for the people of Girlington. At St. Edmund’s forward planning day in February, Staff, governors and parents identified a range of activities which could be provided, these were as far ranging as health drop- ins, baby massage, adult classes, café facilities, holiday activities for children. The centre will be open for 48 weeks per year for general use, though obviously the education nursery will remain on school hours.
